An elderly Schuylkill County man was sentenced to a state prison term Monday in Carbon County court on a corruption of a minor charge, rated as a felony two. Stephen Olman, 80, of McAdoo, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve five to 24 months in a state correctional institution.

A Carbon County man who admitted scamming an elderly woman out of over $50,000 by telling her he needed the cash for medical bills due to having cancer, was sentenced Monday to a state prison term. Thomas Peter Bertalan Jr., 51, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve 24 to 60 months in a state correctional institution and make restitution of $50,323 to his 84-year-old victim.

Last month, council agreed to create an ordinance for mobile food vehicle licensing, which would create regulations for mobile food trucks. Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the borough received a few requests for food trucks along the trail and within town.

State police at Lehighton said the incident occurred about 3:32 p.m. on the 700 block of Lehigh Street in Bowmanstown borough. Troopers said the victim was alerted by his barking dog in the backyard of his home.

Per a unanimous motion, the district is abolishing the position of middle school assistant principal and adding a dean of students in its place. While the assistant principal position fell under the Act 93 agreement, the dean of students will be a professional position and in turn save the district financially, according to Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver.

Two candidates won both Democratic and Republican nominations for four four-year terms up for grabs on the Lehighton Area School District Board of Education, while one of them joined a third candidate, who also won both nominations for two two-year terms that are expected to be filled by the electorate later this year. Voters in Lehighton, Weissport and Parryville boroughs and Franklin, East Penn and Mahoning townships participated in the district balloting Tuesday, where 11 people ran on both tickets for the four-year nominations and nine of them sought two two-year term nominations.

Fire company donates to Veterans Court

On Wednesday, Lonny Armbruster, president of the fire company, visited Carbon County Courtroom 2 to present a $2,000 check from the fire company to help cover costs for Veterans Court, a new specialty court that aims to help veterans in trouble with the law get the help they need instead of facing incarceration. “We typically look for different places to donate money,” he said.

Emma Bonser, a junior auxiliary member of Shoemaker-Haydt Unit 314 American Legion Auxiliary, has been named the organization's Little Miss Poppy for 2017-18. After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe and became a symbol of the sacrifices made by Americans and allied service members around the world.
